My Guru Amma www.Amma.com has a tradition of giving you a new name. For five years I have asked Her for a name. It is a special way to bond you to Her and to be called the name of your soul.

The first time I asked in America I waited in line and was about to be called up for a name. I was next. Ahhh. There was a girl in front of me who was sitting by Amma getting her name. She sat there for 4 hours or more. I waited and waited and waited, finally they said Amma will not give any more names today. Then a year later in India I asked Amma "name?" She said nothing. So here I was the third time in line.

When my turn came up the Swami showed Amma a couple of names with the letter A. Amma looked at me and said "name?" She looked confused as to why I was there, and pointed to a name. I was told to sit down behind Her. They said your name is "Anavadya".

I was shocked that was not what I expected. What does it mean? Swamiji said it meant Perfect or faultless. Well that was not so bad. I found out that in the Lalita Sahasranama or the thousand names of the Divine Mother it was number 50 or number 150 and meant one without blemishes. I take this a challenge to aspire towards that.

So please call me by my new name Anavadya. May we all strive towards the Self which is free of blemish and the soul which is already perfect.
